About This Site

Top Senior Mobility Aids is written by Bernie Okonski, a retired dental office manager who learned after a knee replacement which mobility aids actually earn their place in a home. We publish honest reviews, side-by-side comparisons and plain how-to guides for rollator walkers, walking canes, toilet safety rails, bed assist rails and reacher grabbers, so seniors and the families helping them can stay steady, independent and out at the card table.

Mobility Aid Safety

Mobility aids help with balance and getting around, but they are not medical treatment and they do not replace advice from your doctor or physical therapist. Ask a professional to check the fit and height of any walker or cane before you rely on it. A cane or walker set too high or too low can make balance worse, not better.

Always check the weight rating on the product listing and never exceed it. Lock the brakes on a rollator before sitting on its seat, and never sit on it while it is moving or on a slope. Check rubber tips, wheels, brakes, push buttons and locking pins regularly, and replace worn tips right away, because a slick tip on a wet floor is a common cause of falls.

Toilet safety rails and bed assist rails must be installed exactly as the instructions say and tested with your weight before daily use. A bed rail can create a gap between the rail and the mattress, which can be an entrapment risk, especially for anyone with memory problems or limited movement. Keep floors clear of rugs and cords, add good lighting for night trips, and if you have a fall or a new balance problem, talk to your doctor.
